1972 was the second year for Wildlife Racing and the Snake and Mongoose stepped up the power, speed and appearance of their funny cars. Tom McEwen started of the season with a win in the AHRA Spring Nationals and not be outdone, Don Prudhomme with a best run that year of 226 MPH! Auto World’s recent release of the second version of the Legends of the Quarter Mile Race Set (SRS334) featuring the 1972 liveries of these larger than life funny cars. The Snake II versus The Mongoose II continues the excitement of HO scale drag racing. Let’s take a closer look at what comes in the box!
Here’s a quick look at what greets you when you open the box.
Here are the contents of the race set.
The race set comes with 13 feet of track, a start and finish gate with a winner “pop-up” indicator, controller, power pack and enough guard rail to line the strip. And of course the Snake II and Mongoose II funny cars.
Auto World has even supplied color matching controllers for the two rival funny cars.
The starting gate is a simple banner that clips onto the track and matches up to the starting line graphic on the power terminal track.
The finish gate has a spring loaded mechanism that will pop up on the side of the track for the car that crosses first There are stickers included that can be applied to each side so everyone can see who won the latest match race.
The second generation of the The Mongoose funny car, the Mongoose II, continued on the with Plymouth Duster and a new flashier paint scheme highlighting flames and the Mattel Hot Wheels sponsorship. Changing from red to blue was another major shift in the livery in 1972. Tom McEwen was such a dominant force in Funny cars that year, he won the AHRA Spring Nationals, the inaugural PRA National Challenge and the “Last Drag Race at Lions beating out the Snake in the final. The Mongoose was named 1972 Drag News Driver of the Year.
Don Prudhomme’s weapon of choice for the 1972 season was still the Plymouth Barracuda. His Buttera chassised, 426 Hemi powered funny car set records all through 1972 and carried on into 1973. The Alpine White and red flamed livery was easy to spot, replacing 1971’s yellow version. This version of the car even appeared in the 2013 feature film “Snake & Mongoose”. It recently came up for auction in 2017, fully restored to all it’s performance glory.
If you are a classic drag racing fan and dig the historic nostalgia of the high speed flopper from this era, you can’t go wrong with this set. The liveries are excellently detailed and the will bring the excitement of quarter mile competition right to your living room floor.
