This is the catch up article to fill in some of the gaps between 2015 and the first stages of demolition of the original Woodrum Ridge Raceway. We will cover the scenery pieces and details that were added in the final two years of WRR. In late 2014 I reviewed the SlotStructures H.O. buildings that the company manufactured specifically for slot racing. I really liked the product line (Click here to go the review articles) and purchased enough of the pit garages and grandstands to fill out my scenery plans. Here are some of the pictures I captured while I added these components.
The pictures above show the SlotStructures grandstands. These are three units placed together. The grandstands include press boxes, concessions stands in the rear and even has a flag/officials stand that can over hang the track. The center unit is the only one that is completely assembled with the bleacher seats in place. The details on the sides are etched and show well even after they are painted. the units are easy to assemble and are very sturdy. They come with solid bases and have some weight to they so they don’t move around once they are placed and do not need to be glued in place. That’s a great feature if you want to remove the buildings during a race if they block some of the line of sight for turns in your track.
Here are three of the SlotStructures pit garage kits assembled to make the pit row for WRR. The pit garages are split in design to cover the oval and the road course. The oval side is decorated to cover the 1980’s era stock car theme and the road course side is laid out to look like the 1960’s road racing era. Later in the year I added a pit wall and painted in the pit lanes. Sponsor and team banners were printed and glued to the upper banner walls. The pictures above show the oval side of the garages and the pictures below cover the road course side.
The last Slotstructures item is their take on the “Dunlop” tire bridge. SlotStructures can create your raceway’s name for the bridge for an extra cost. I thought it was too cool to have Woodrum Ridge Raceway on the bridge. Originally I had wired the bridge to be the light bridge for the lap counters. I used clear Christmas tree lights, but those were not practical and burned out often. So the lights came out and the bridge was restored to a scenic structure.
The light bridges were created in the last article and I decided it was a bit dull to have these red boxes hanging over the track. I decided they would make interesting control towers. I printed some windows (see graphics below) and added these to turn the red boxes into part of the track scenery.
This is the last article before the demolition coverage. But don’t worry, WRR still has a happy ending.
